VIP: Volunteer's in Preparation

Kairos Volunteers in Preparation Program

August 18 - 19, 2006

Holy Communion
Lutheran Church

in Spartanburg

The Kairos Volunteers in Preparation (VIP) Program provides a means of preparing potential volunteers for service in the Kairos community, by introducing them to the methods and essentials of the Kairos ministry.  The program provides participants with a spiritual experience similar to what resident inmates experience as they participate in Kairos ministry activities.

Completion of the VIP Program qualifies participants to begin volunteer service in the Kairos Prison Ministry, Kairos Outside and Kairos Torch

Kairos for Men and Women
Well-organized and well-trained volunteer teams of men and women from the communities surrounding an institution present an introductory 3_-day weekend, described as a short course in Christianity. This interdenominational team of volunteers – both clergy and laypersons – works in cooperation with the Chaplain who carefully selects up to 42 inmate leaders to attend. A follow up program is part of this ministry, incorporating monthly reunion visits to the institution.

Read a testimonial!
I just wanted to thank you again for the weekend. Being a training manager and conducting 'workshops', I KNOW how much work goes into planning and executing a successful event. Thank You All.

I am proud that you have been preparing the way and excited that I will be joining the journey of sharing God's Love to those who so need to know it. "There but for the Grace of God go I". If you only knew...

My prayer is to make a positive impact. Period. Aside from maybe helping a few people along the way, I know that I will grow and learn more of what it is to "BE" a Christian from OUR Kairos Ministry than anything I can think of. Most 'small groups' talk and learn', not that, that is bad. Kairos gives the opportunity to talk, learn, share, lead, council and do. The "whole nine yards.

Kairos Torch for Youthful Offenders
Kairos Torch offers unconditional love and acceptance, encouraging youthful offenders to share their life journey through participation in a long term mentoring process. The program begins with a 40 hour retreat inside the prison. Torch team members commit to a weekly one-on-one mentoring process with the youthful offenders for six months after the retreat.

Kairos Outside for Female Family & Friends
Kairos Outside is a special weekend retreat designed to support the female loved ones of men and women who are or have been incarcerated. Families of the incarcerated “do time” right along with their loved ones. In a safe environment with loving people, women interact with other women who are in similar situations and learn to form small groups to support and give them strength for the challenges they face.Photo: Prison Christmas gift exchange between a daughter and mother.

With your support, God is calling us to grow the Ministry and reach the 1,248,270 men, women and youth that are in prison. The miracles of Kairos are taking place in over 285 prisons worldwide. The red dots on the map represent the 692 prisons in our United States mission field.

Christ’s call in Matthew 25 reflects God’s desire for us to meet human needs and bring Christ’s love to the abandoned.

”I was in prison, and you visited me.” Matthew 25:36

Interested?
If you think you might want to respond to Christ’s call to visit those in prison, and to do it in a way that is both challenging and rewarding, or if you would just like to learn more about the Kairos prison ministry and how you might offer your support, we have the answer for you!

We have developed a simple and easy way for you to receive orientation and instruction about the Kairos ministry, while at the same time enjoying the fellowship of your friends and partners in the Christian life. The Volunteers In Preparation (VIP) program is a two to two and a half day spiritual retreat where you can learn about Kairos from experienced Kairos volunteers in a comfortable, familiar environment. Kairos volunteers are folks just like you who have responded to Christ’s call to visit those in prison and who have experienced the joy and satisfaction of serving our Lord in a meaningful and useful way.

Come join with us, and bring a friend!
